Thanks. No looters. There was one day with 15000 protestors downtown Oslo but it was peaceful. Lasted an hour or so.

We moved today to an island called Bolærne. This was a coastal fortress from 1916 until 1999 and closed for public. It closed in 1999 and after the dismantling of secret and dangerous things it opened for public. Very nice and interesting Island and many great places to swim. Still lots of stuff from the military to see.

The fortress battled the Germans during the invasion of Norway. Unfortunately the commander was upheld in the neutrality rules and only fired warning shots. The Germans attacked with aircraft and soon the guns was out of order. One Norwegian soldier was killed while he was hoisting the white flag for surrender. Luckily the commander of the fort further in the fjord at Oscarsborg did his job. I've told you about that before.

During the cold war the fort was upgraded and together with another fortress across the fjord and mines it was the first line of defense for the Capital. It was on a 30 minutes readiness.

Here are some pictures.

Lunch was takeaway pizza from the cafe at the island.

Glad you like it. I know this is a bbq forum but since there is a place to post general stuff i might as well use it.

Some more pictures from the island. After breakfast with freshly baked bread and fresh, warm, Danish we did some more exploration of the island.

The fortress was captured by the Nazi's. In one picture you can see the old cannons they built. There were 4 of them next to each other. Barrels are locked with main now. But it is a typical building from the war.

One view from inside a gun tower with view over the harbor.

We got a visit from the SAR craft. We have them along the entire coast. The ships are manned with volunteers that spend their freetime on the ship helping others. They rescue many lifes during the year. The ships aren't very big but they can handle really bad weather and high seas. And they're fast. Over 40 knots. ImageImageImageImageImageImage

I’ve only met up with lake patrol (Dallas PD) on Hubbard one time. May have been the only time in my life there was not a single beer on the boat.

Little more history.
Got a guided tour inside the ABC bunker. It's more than 161.000 square feet with sleeping quarters, medic quarters, fire guidance, underground parts of the automatic cannons and more. Under a nuclear attack they could stay underground for 30 days.

In the pictures you can see the entrance, target radar screens for the Bofors cannons, shell storage etc.

Across the fjord, about 7500 yards, there was a similar fortress. Both could remote operate each other cannons.

What I don't understand is why such places are closed. I understand it could be targeted by missiles, but then it should have a decent missile defense. Let's hope the responsible authorities have a better approach and that it is not all down to money. I have my doubts.ImageImageImageImageImageImageImageImage
