OUP
you get the credit for the next major improvement in the grilling setup for the 22"OldSmokey
your idea of making "S"hooks from coathanger wire-
you have just eliminated the 12oz aluminum cans used to raise the fire grate to 4½"
I made some simple hanger hooks out of coathanger wire to hang on the 3 leg screws that support the grill grate
drilled holes in the lip of the fire grate
I would bet that Bruce at OldSmokey will carry this forward as a new improvement for the 22"OS

BTW- I use a large foil pan with the bottom cut out to contain the charcoal into a more even layer
the edges of the pan also "focus" the heat up
it also works with little 1/2 chimneys of charcoal for small cooks
just pile up the coals at one end of the foil pan

Dang, is it too late to apply for a Patent :?: :dont: :laughing7: of course no holes were needed in my app because I was only hanging a grilling rack - - - for ease of attaching yours, you might even consider putting a small 1/8" eye-bolt in each hole so that the eye is on top "awaiting" your S-hooks. :dont:

actually, it's easier to just catch the hole along the lip
than it would be with an eye bolt

1-sided indirect with a ½ chimney of coals in the corner
running in the mid 200°s

I replaced my 22.5" Silver Weber with the 26.75" Gold. I love the bigger size and capacity. The drawbacks so far are that it tends to eat charcoal. Also, it takes a chimney and a half, versus a full chimney to fill it. I love it though.

I appreciate all the opinions and advice. My decision was made for me on Sunday by my wonderful wife who brought me home a new 22" Kettle. I had about decided on a PBC but she decided for the one that got absolutely no votes. Oh well, I will enjoy it anyway. There's always next time! It is now residing beside my 22" Old Smokey and made some delicious salmon on it last night.
