Need help deciding....

Planning on purchasing a new cooker before too long. Was gonna go with a Weber 22 because I used to have a Performer and really liked it. Thinking back I do remember sometimes when I overcrowded so I was thinking about the 26" one instead. I won't get another Performer because it's too much trouble to move from my deck to my porch in case of rain so the 26" is basically twice the price of the 22". Not sure it's worth it when I could get 2 22" for the price of one 26". Then my darling wife threw in that the best bbq I ever cooked was on my old Big Poppa drum which got me to thinking about a PBC. Seems like the things I didn't like about the Big Poppa (very few things such as portability and cleaning) would be taken care of with the PBC. Thoughts, opinions and advice?????

I'd go with the Weber, but, having no experience with the PBC, I guess I'm somewhat biased.

Last choice would be the 22" AND SINCE you have so many good things to say about your experience with the Big Poppa I think you should "Dance with the one that brung ya" and get the PBC. :dont:

For the record Capt, I already have an Old Smokey and love it!! I am considering just getting another Old Smokey as well. Mine is some worse for wear after taking a tumble across the deck in the wind storm a couple of weeks ago. Maybe I should have added that one to the poll as well....

The only grill I'd replace my 22" Weber kettle with is a 26" Weber Kettle.

Old Smokey makes a fine cooker as well but I personally still prefer the way my Weber cooks.

Question - are you wanting it to grill and smoke or just grill?

put together a special package at Christmas - with the long legs, the hinged grill grate, the lid hanger bracket, &the Thermometer in the lid for $70

I probably do more grilling than smoking. My longest cooks are Boston butts. Cook a lot of ribs but more chicken than anything I would guess. Also tritips, steaks etc.

Hey Capt, how do you fair on high heat cooks (steaks etc) on the Smokey? It's been years since I've had one so I can't remember of the fire was far away from the grate or if it could be adjusted?

on the 22" the fire grate is 8" below the grill, which is killer for chicken direct over the coals.
the chicken is high enough that flare-ups can't burn the food
BUT... as you mentioned, you're "roasting" a steak, not searing it

if you set up 12oz cans (5"tall) on the bottom it raises the fire grate to 4½" below the grill. 1/2" closer than a Weber

Beautiful bed of charcoal there, Capt'n :tup: - - - I do a similar thing with my ECB but, instead of aluminum cans to rest the grate on, I fashioned some elongated "S" hooks from a coathanger to drop and suspend my top grill grate. I started using this in order to do a beer can Turkey using the very bottom charcoal pan for my fire location.

ALL OF THIS improving that "We" do sure does make me wonder ?why? they don't design these things so that you have several set ups that you can automatically do :?: :dont:
