Asparagus

Postby bondobill » Tue Mar 21, 2017 8:07 am

Been a long cold winter this year. We had another 6" of snow just a couple weeks ago.
Last weekend the sun finally came out so I figured I better weed my raised bed garden before the Asparagus starts to come up. Well I was too late ....Spring must be close :D

Lol, you grow it too, my wife planted some I think 2 years ago, our last growth was about 5 months ago with Just spindly pieces, I'm told it takes 2 or 3 years until you get stuff good enough to eat. This spring hopefully we be eating from our own crop. Is your crop established? And how do you cook yours.? I pan fry then just before serving a splash of balsamic vinegar.

We love asparagus.

Aww, look how cute!

We used to grow asparagus, but didn't have enough sun to sustain the bed.

Hey Russ

About 5 years ago we planted 12 Asparagus root crowns. The first year we didn't harvest any per directions. The second year we harvested up to about the first of May. Every year there after we ended our harvest about a week later then the year before.
We've lost a few plant to Rodents, grubs and whatever over the years but we still harvest more then we can eat.

Heres how Barb....me better half does em, which I really enjoy.....She starts with about a 1/2" of water with a teaspoon of sugar in a skillet add the spears and then turn heat up to high until the water starts to boil. At this point she turns the heat down to simmer and after 5 minutes check the thick end of the spear with a fork. If the spear probes tender with the fork she drains them and serves with melted butter and seasoning to your preferance
