So, we've decided to add a family member to the family. She should come home in about ten days.
She's half golden retriever and half Nova Scotia duck tolling retriever. We're calling her a Golden Toller.
I'm hoping she'll hunt with me once she grows a bit.
But, we cannot agree on a name.
Y'all have any ideas?

Re: Need an Assist!
I had a half Golden and called her "Sugar" - - - she was a natural hunting dog and I never had to do anything to teach her - - - I swear she would tree squirrels, work cattle and point quail (ok so she would'nt stay on point and would spook them HAHAHA) one of the best friends I ever had.
Congrats and enjoy - - - OH one more thing - - - a professional water dog man told me that one of the most important things to know about a Golden was "Loose your temper and you'll Loose your dog" - just a slight and firm change in your voice will usually do it. - - - sorry bout the ramblin
OH one more if I may - - - if you're going to hunt her then her name should not sound like one of her commands I.E. Flo or Beau sounds like NO ETC

Re: Need an Assist!
Out current golden is 8. Her name is Shiloh. I swear she would have been an amazing bird dog, except that on new years eve when she was 6 months old, our neighbor was shooting off some artillery shells and the wind was blowing them so they would burst over our house.
After that, the dog could not stand loud noises.
But she'll retrieve all day long. And she'll let me cast her and will hold her spot until released. Oh well. She's a great family dog.
Hopefully we can avoid the noise issues with this one!

Re: Need an Assist!
just ease her into them and make the noise connected with something good like playing with the kids, eating, petting - - - I popped many a paper sack from two rooms away before I could pop one in her ear and get no response - - - had a dog that was gun shy from a previous owner and if you shot then she was headed home

Re: Need an Assist!
that's what shooting muffs are for
dropping a book on a flat surface works well also - - - kids cap pistols - - - or if you were a teenie bopper you could just pop your chewing gum
treat it like you do your oink bonz "low and slow"

Re: Need an Assist!
you've jump started parts of my memory that hasn't been called up in years
one thing I thought of was you "must" make the kiddos aware of the importance in easing the pup into noise, especially loud close noise - - - they could even take part in the training process so it didn't seem like a disciplinary action for them - - - I'll s'hup now

Thanks for the tips Em!
Bry, the wife vetoed brisket. I threw out pork chop, but I expect that to encounter some AAA as well.
