Live edge waterfall end pecan table

Picked up a large slab of pecan a while back to make a table. It was 2" thick and 10' long. Original plan was a 6' kitchen table and 4' bench for the end of a bed supported by twin pedestals of roughly 6" x 8" pecan columns. But I didn't like the look so I changed to a table with a waterfall edge using a finger joint on the waterfall end.

Wood and I don't go together so I have the utmost respect for a wood craftsman. Anything I've tried to make always looks like there's something missing. I'd love to see that wood up close.

BIL trimmed his tree about three years ago and I still have plenty pecan for smoking.

No left overs here. Think of it like a boucherie (translation - South Louisiana Hog slaughter). Everything but the squeal is used.

For example: a cell phone stand for my bride.

Looks really nice Egg.
If u happen to run across some exotics like Cocobolo or Wenge, give them a shot.
Something like that table would blow your mind in those two woods.
Just keep 2 things in mind.
If you get a splinter from Wenge, don't​ play it off, that species is known for bad infections. Also, both woods are ( blade killers ).
But, the end results are gorgeous.

Gorgeous work Egg, particularly that beautifully precise finger joint. I work with wood so I know that a finger joint like that on a heavy piece of timber just doesn't happen by accident. Band saw and some roller stands?

I see similar work in Wedt Texas and NM where they fill in the knot holes w crushed turquoise or other semi precious stone grindings or gravel and seal and fill with clear epoxy. Cool stuff. But haven't seen a piece of wood with this much movement in the wood. Reminds of olive wood.

Boots - I actually just used a jig saw to cut the joints. Spent some extra time laying out the cuts and cut inside the line leaving plenty opportunities to make adjustments.

BTW - the slab came from Swift River Pecans in Martindale which is close to Lockhart (handy for a visit to Black's, Smitty's, or Kreuz's BBQ joints ). Swift River Pecans has a large kiln capable of handling quite large slabs. Nice folks as well.

I really like the turquoise inlay with epoxy but haven't tried it yet.

Just a heads up in case you don't know, if you can get ur hands on ( Sleeping Beauty ) Turquoise grab as much as you can if you can spend the loot on it. The sleeping beauty mine in Arizona closed up about 4 years ago. I bought quite a bit back then when I caught wind of the closing. You can still get regular Turquoise, but for woodwork we prefer Sleeping Beauty. It has less carbon pieces ( black specs ) and makes inlays so much better. It also has a brighter, deeper color over other turquoise mines.
9 out of 10 of our customers request sleeping beauty over our ( regular ) turquoise.

Bottom line, if u see it, grab it because once it's gone, it's gone and you will pay $$$$$$$$$$$ for a marble sized stone.
