Never done this before

Postby Txdragon » Wed Aug 23, 2017 8:49 pm

So I'm heating my 10" Griswold cast iron pan to get some burgers going for dinner.. All of a sudden, I hear what sounds like a pipe getting hit by a 2×4 then, I see this happened...

This pan has seen at least 50 years worth of work, now it can rest in peace..

Dude !!!!

I know that sound ALL TOO WELL !!
I'm sorry for ur loss with ur cast, that sucks. I've had cast break before, but it was directly over fire for too long with nothing in it.
50 years is alot to ask for any pan, it has definitely proven itself long ago for ya..

Russ[/quote]I've never seen shrapnel fly from cast before, they usually just crack.

Most welders say you can't weld cast iron but I know for a fact that using a high nickle rod, it can be done..

Dang, T-Dragon, that's almost like loosing a good pet - - - - especially the vintage castiron that you've spent time with over the years - wonder if it's fixable ?

YES I say it is worth the trouble. I know most people don't care how they do it in japan, but if an antique plate or china piece is broken they have it fixed and joined together in gold. now this is America, is say have it fixed and joined with high nickel and keep it doing its job for another 50 years.

My poor little fluxcore welder couldn't even heat this thing enough to spread the crack. Lol! My brother has welded iron before and he says it is a chore and a half. Think it's gonna just go out to the shed in a mausoleum fashion. Lol
