Last year we split a pig with the in laws and we were helpless when it came to choosing what we got. This year I got his number and would like to see what you folks get when it comes to this.
He just sent me a text saying his going rate is $1.80 per pound for hanging weight. Does this seem decent? I know prices will be different depending on the area but when it comes to the bacon and such that's cheap here. Even ribs and such only get as low as $1.68 when they are on sale.
What all do you guys normally ask for? I know this can depend on what he makes too but I was curious what you guys get since we smoke a lot of food here...

Re: Buying a pig advice
If you have a good butcher then go and see them, tell you what you want. I recently did a pig on a spit, my idea and what my butcher suggested was poles apart. He was correct, 100% perfect cook. I'm also lucky one of my best friends is a retired butcher as well. Good luck and keep us posted with pics.
