Off topic. Anybody here make stuff or engineer like

Postby Copasspupil » Mon Jul 30, 2018 11:48 pm

Catchy title wasn’t it??
If this is not good to talk about, let me know. I am in the final stages of finishing my camping trailer for my kids to go explore the world. I designed a tent trailer or a roof top trailer RTT for short. I just recently bought a foxwing awning to attach this to the tent frame. I’ve run into a slight roadblock as to how to attach this awning to the frame. My frame is DOM tubing 1 3/4” and has a curve to it as it attaches to the sides of the trailer. Now no one makes this bracket to secure it to the frame nor to the awning so I need to make something. See the pics below to understand it further. I found a site that sells a kit but it won’t work for me. I was thinking about using some of the extra DOM tubing and weld it to some flat stock use ubolts to secure the tube to the frame which is the same diameter or use square tubing to flats stock the ubolt to it as well but the width is 2”. I know that it appears as though I need to have ~ 15” length tubing. Any thoughts?

I see no reason that "this" can't be discussed here in General Discussion so Good Luck with your Quest and let us know what you decide. :salut:

Does your Awning have Eyelets ?
Plastic or steel if so ?
There are Eyelet/Braces that are two pieces of Aluminum that go from one eyelet to the other and have a closed loop welded to one side so it can be held secure. It clamps on " both sides of the Awning and sandwiches it. A bolt goes thru one bracket, the awning eyelets and bracket again and tightened with a nut, locknut and washer, all Stainless.

I'm thinking that you could use something like that to connect ur awning directly to your DOM. ? That type of pipe is way strong enough to really crank down on the ubolts.

Here’s a few more pics I found this morning.

Since mine has to lay on top due to the curve and attached to this aluminum frame of the awning, I’m not sure which would be best.

Try Papa Tom. He the resident scientist, or Egghead, he’s the engineer. We also got Rambo the Astronaut on here, he’s probably one or more of the above, they train those guys to stick their square peg in a round hole in an emergency ( dirty minds!) like Apollo 13 and he might have an idea.

Me, I’d just throw a tarp over my sleeping bag, Dad said I didn’t have sense enough to get outta the rain.

I ended up going to my local welding shop and asking what they thought and came up with a plan. The awning only weighs 40 pounds, but driving with it and on a trailer, I wanted it over built so we are making the plates and welding it on instead.

Sounds like a plan :salut: - - I was going to make a suggestion but it was primarily pull ties and duct tape :dont: :laughing7:

Instead of laying the support attachment underneath, I’m placing it on top using square tubing and flat stock for the end which attaches the awning.
