Smoke shacks...who knows how to build one??

Postby Copasspupil » Tue Apr 30, 2019 6:32 pm

Looking to build one. 4x4x8-10’ high. Thinking fire pit concrete footings. Small chimney and obvious door. Insulated walls and maybe a couple wooden closet poles to hold up the product.

Talk to Papa Tom as I recall he has skills in this area, and I think he is a sausage king as well which would fall into the smokehouse wheelhouse. Great topic, I've had thought along these lines, what with a bunch of scrap lumber in my woodloft looking for a project to be.

Found the old post where he made one outta a cardboard box. Still fascinates me to this day.

I've seen and looked at a few online but my biggest worry/problem is how to I keep the field rats away from my meat. I think I need to place a concrete pad with footings for the walls. I was planning on placing it on the back side of my shed and away from the misses who dislikes the smell of smoke near the house. Thought about just having a burn barrel for the pit then recycling racks from ovens installed on the rear of the walls with a few closet bars to allow the meat to hang.

Or just add on to my smoker a section to hang meat to cold smoke...

The smell of smoke would likely deter the rats.
Concrete pad or block foundation probably best choice. I have seen old refrigerators make good smokehouses with a detached firebox but most fridges these days have plastic insides.
Because i have a pellet cooker it is easy to pipe smoke to a separate box however the cardboard box had it's own smoke generator make out of a re-purposed bird feeder.

I'm thinking a wood structure on some kind of concrete foundation would work fine.
