The king and his sailboat.
Was down at the harbor doing some TLC on the boat. Our king has his boat 50-60 yards away from us.
The king is a very experienced sailor. Saw him going out yesterday but forgot my phone. He went out today too.
He has several boats and his ship but also a ocean sailing race boat and this old green sailboat which he went out with today with his crew. The crew is usually some old friends of him. This old sailboat was built in n 1937 and was used in regattas by king Olav. The present kings father.
Cool thing is a few years ago the sailboat was in a museum and in a very bad shape and not seaworthy, leaking water. The king brought it out and restored it. It's now in pristine condition and he's using it for everyday sailing. The boat that tows it out of the harbor is also his and a beauty. I've posted about that before. It's called "stjernen" meaning "the star".
Cool thing is there is very little visible security around him. There is a speedboat following them out with a couple of policemen. If I wanted I could very well walk by them on the pier and speak a few words to him but we don't do that. You don't speak to the king unless he speaks to you first.
In the first picture you can see the king sitting with his back towards us on his boat. In the other two he's holding the rudder.
During the summer the king is living in his summer residence close to the harbor. Actually the harbor is a part of his property. The summer residence is actually an active farm with livestock. Been in the royal family since the year 1305. Present building is from 1733. You can see the main building in the last photo. We drive past it on our way to the harbor.

Thanks. Being a small country and a kingdom it's a bit different from the US. Besides I love history.
Here you can see pictures from inside the residence. It's a Norwegian page but I used Google translate so hopefully it shows in English

Thank you Russ.
Many hard lessons learnt during WWII. We had our share of them.

Considering this and previous post of yours, as they say “It’s good to be King”!

Ok. That's about 550 km from me. On the west coast. Our oil capital.k.a.m. wrote:Joernolav wrote:Thanks. Where in Norway does your friend live?k.a.m. wrote:That is really cool thank you for sharing.

Ah, you reminded me, the commandos set fire to thousands of tonnes of fish oil, so it couldn't be used for the glycerine. Explosives.
Who would have thought??? Not me anyway.

Yes. Many commando raids during the war. The most famous is about a group of commandos stopped the Germans to get the heavy water produced at the powerplant in Rjukan.
A great movie about this raid for those interested:
