And you really need some Dr. Pepper for your get together. And you have to learn Texan for proper protocol.
Like this:
Wanna coke?
Yeah what kind ya got?
I got strawberry, root beer, Coke and Dr. Pepper.
Ah great gimmy a Dr Pepper.
Ya see in Texas sodas are referred to as "cokes" no matter what the flavor.

I could live with that! And I actually love Dr. Pepper

LOL
This side of the pond we have a lot to learn about proper BBQ, but I must agree with Papa Tom ... I'd rather stick with our beers not matter what
Man, some of these German or Belgian beers ...holy crap! They are awesome!!!

First of all, Happy Birthday!
I know that you are going to be drinking primarily beer, but iced tea is also very popular down here for those that don't drink alcohol.
I didn't see it on the list, but biscuits or cornbread (Texas style, of course...baked with bits of jalapeno peppers and topped with cheese) would be appropriate. Possibly Texas Toast too!
Are watermelons in season over there? Nothing says Texas more than a good watermelon and a shaker of salt!
I find it fitting for a German to have a 'Texas themed' party. Texas does owe a lot of culinary history to 19th century German Settlers, from Texas BBQ to Chicken Fried Steak (Texas style Wiener schnitzel served with white peppery gravy). We here in Texas would refer to the German influenced cuisine as 'the next evolutionary step'.

Can't forget the Spoetzel brewery, Shiner, TX.

Thanks everyone for great tips. I think I'll start to get a good picture what to do. Six days to go!!
I'm thinking of serving:
- smoked BBQ ribs
- grilled "roadside" chicken (drumsticks and hot wings)
- grilled sausages
- hot & spicy BBQ beans
- potato salad
- coleslaw, salad, etc
- bread, maybe corn bread if I have time to try it out first
Drinks will be beer, iced tea and some booze of course.
For dessert watermelon and fresh pineapple and some cakes my missus will bake.
We got the red and white checkered tablecloths yesterday, we got some candles, petrol lanterns, garden torches and lots of wood for making a nice fire in the garden. For the music, I'll be playing both Country AND Western!
How does this sound?
Cheers,
Sterno
