Here Piggy Piggy

My father just called me this morning at work and asked if I wanted a pig. A friend of his trapped 4 wild hogs last night in the 60 - 70#'ish range. Looks like we will go out tomorrow and slaughter them and have a lot of oink meat for the freezer! I'll try and get some pics.

Are those feral pigs leaner than the commercial type?

Yes they are more lean. You really want a small sow. The big boars aren't worth eatin' but the little sows are oh-so succulent! :D

Hey Tex... just about the right size for rotissin' :) Kind of far from Everett, WA to Sherman, Texas (2,200 mi) otherwise I'd come down with my spit and do it for ya!

We trapped a few young male feral hogs years ago in HI and we castrated them and penned them for several months. Meat was delicious compared to the uncastrated ones.

Good luck...

My mom was telling me that they've been seeing wild hogs all over this year. She saw one in the field right beside their house and said it was the biggest hog she'd ever seen. Not sure why they're suddenly seeing them because in the 24 years I lived down there, we never saw any around the house and we were all the time in the woods.

She asked my dad about him shooting one and putting it in the freezer. He told her they're best if you can pen them up and feed them out like you would a farm raised hog. They've both had wild hog meat before that wasn't fed out and didn't care for it.

Allie... Your dad got it right about the wild hogs. The males should also be castrated for better growth and taste. Smaller hogs are more tender and taste better.
