Why don't you just go into a grocery store and ask for butchers twine?

It shouldn't make any difference, it's not like you're putting it on a plate to serve. I've even used some of Mrs Crochet thread with success. Just make sure its not plastic thread as that will melt. Cotton works just swell.

White twine has been bleached, off-white hasn't.

The sad thing is, I've asked for butchers twine before at grocery meat counters, and I can't tell you how many stupid 'huh?' responses I get....
Sorry Bill, didn't mean to sound sarcastic...I was posting in a hurry..

A quick qoogle search yielded
http://www.chefsresource.com/butchers-s ... twine.html

Says it is 100% biodegradable cotton. Seems to me any cotton string that is 100% cotton and hasn't been dyed is biodegradable.

Go for the brown! I'm sure it is the same stuff as the white, just hasn't been bleached.

I have had a hard time finding it around here. I asked at one grocery store in the meat department and the guy went in the back and gave me a bunch of it. Since then, I've found it in the small section of that grocery store where they have the kitchen utensils and bake ware items.

You can get it at Wal-Mart. Either in housewares or look in the sewing and crafts section.
