Hello every one! My name is Dustin I am new to the world of smoking! I am excited to be entering it but a bit nervous.

I am about to take on a tsk that seems big for me. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I am going to build an offset smoker onto a trailer! I know everyone feel free to laugh even out loud!

I already have most everything I think I will need (I think)! So I though why not try?

I have a trailer, a 200 gallon diesel tank that was on a stand, and all the piping I can dream off! I guess the only thing I am missing is experience in this sort of thing!

I have been welding for years but never tried to build a smoker. I don’t even know where to start! I have been reading your forum for about 2 months now but thought I just as well post something! So anyone open to helping a newbie out?

I guess I need to know how far from the bottom of the tank does my fire box need to be, and how big does my fire box need to be?

Thanks in advance for any and all help! Like I said I am new here but have the equipment, space, stuff, and time so why not? I mean I love great BBQ!

Thanks,
Dustin

Why not? Like I said I am new to this, but I already have it and there is no cost. I guess if it burns out quickly then I would have some experience and could use all my other parts that where still good and build a new one.

Maybe I am looking at this in the wrong way any suggestions?

would the diesel affect the meat? I am not familiar with building this kind of stuff but diesel has that property where it doesn't like to go away. strong smelling stuff that once its on or in some thing its hard to get rid of. ya know?

i agree about the tank. i would be leery of using a tank that had prolonged contact with diesel fuel. i might be wrong, but i would at least research it thoroughly. other than that, an accepted rule of thumb is to make the firebox 1/5 the size of the smoking chamber. take a look at this...... http://www.thesmokering.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=20871 you might have to register to see it, but its free to do so
