Salt Lick in Round Rock

Postby DJ » Wed Apr 29, 2009 5:54 pm

Well, I hate to say it, but somehow the pics which documented our meal at the Salt Lick were erased from my camera.
That being said, I'd rate the Salt Lick as a Q joint I would definitly revisit. Think between the 8 of us which were there, we pretty much tried everything on the menu xcept desert.....
Here's my take on it

Price- Not too bad, 3 meat combo's $11.95 with a family style special which was $16.95 the night we were there. Normally $18.95
Brisket- I thought it was near perfect, nice smoke ring, moist, tender and TASTY!
Ribs- St Louis style with Xcellent taste and consistancy!
Sausage- I liked it, but would have preferred a bit more spice.
Sauce- Two available, (one with Habanero) Not what I think of when I think of Texas sauce, but was pretty good
Turkey- Very Good
Cole Slaw- Pretty typical
Potato Salad- I'd pass, but everyone else liked it.
Was too full from the Q to try desert, but it looked good.

Overall, I think the meats were Xcellent, Service Xcellent, Beer, just the right temp and sides average.
I'd definitly go back.
When going throught Taylor, stopped ay Muellers and picked up some Chipolte sausage which was XCELLENT!

Glad to hear you had a good experience. It sounds pretty much like what the Salt Lick in Dripping Springs was like - 20 years ago. I have not had good experiences the times I have been there since then. I might have to hit the one in Round Rock - like maybe on the way to Taylor!

I'm new here so I am going to revisit this thread. I plan on heading there one day, the driftwood location, cause I caught it on the Food Network on one of there shows. Bobby Flay has a picture there. Also it is BYOB for those that don't know and cash only, and there is a policimo officer directing traffic so watch your suds. plus I think the show said they are only open fri-sun.. The other two locations are a"quick service" as said on there site. As soon as I get a few good runs on my new pit, we are going to head there!

here is there site. http://www.saltlickbbq.com/locations_driftwood.html

I stopped by the saltlick on my trip to Austin last month. I love the pit they have. Reminds me of the Christmas market sausage pits in Frankfurt Germany.

Spent Thanksgiving on Lake Travis with our two sons and DIL. Did some wineries, watched some football (Geaux Tigers), and chilled.

On the way out today we stopped at Salt Lick - wow!!

Awesome, the Salt Lick was always one of my favorite places. I am a huge fan of the sauce there, so even though they put it over everything, it was something I loved. The atmosphere there has changed lately, or so it seems. We used to get there at 7:30pm on a Saturday, and spend over an hour outside waiting, just drinking beer and listening to the guy on geeetar. By the time you get seated and get food, you are starving. I think they have expanded and those lines aren't as long, so it seems like it lost a certain feel.

I don't think they have ever had the best BBQ, but they are always one of the nice places to visit. I can't take an out of town visitor to Franklins to sit in 105 degree heat for a 2hr wait, but I can take him to Salt Lick for an hour of beer drinking in a relaxed environment. Salt Lick does have one of the prettiest pits there. I love the look of that thing, though I have no idea how effective it would be for a full day of BBQ cooking.

Snow Bunny is right, mostly for looks and reheating/keeping cooked meats warm sauced and moist. Look past that and you see many other smokers. You can see them out back to where they add the wood from the outside. Food is ok, experience especially for first timers is great. I do love that whole pit chopping block scene though, way kewl.

Not a huge fan of the "Q" but do like their sauces, particularly the Laurens.
If you are @ Dripping Springs in the day time take a walk about 200ft out behind the place & take a look down @ the scenic view of Onion Creek. Pretty cool!
