DFW Area - Fred's ?

Postby roaniecowpony » Tue May 01, 2012 3:27 pm

I'm going to be at DFW for a couple days. A friend said I should try Fred's. Anyone verify this would be a good choice?

DFW Area - Fred's ?

If its Fred's BBQ in Irving I couldn't recommend it. It's been a while since I been there but I told myself then I'd never be back. New owner. Back when the previous owner had it, it was a pretty good joint.

So, no on Fred's eh?

Ok, another recommendation was Hard 8 in Coppell and also Cousins. I'm likely to get over by Love Field to check out Willoughby & McCabe's and Jackson Armory. BBQ around there would be convenient too. Any recs?

The original Sonny Bryans is over there by Love Field - although has its good days and bad days. Last time I was there I recall thinking "I'm not coming back".

Hard 8 is decent, but expensive. The beans are free <- keep that in mind as you are piling up on the sides in the line. I like the Hard 8.

I would also suggest Coopers in the FTW Stockyards if you are up for a little drive. Can do a little sight seeing over there too.

Main Street BBQ in Euless is good, IMO.

We eat at Spring Creek and Dickies - both chains, but are usually decent BBQ.

Freds BBQ is just commercial, but he has a loaded Potato that has many of his items on it and it is pretty good. We had a pretty good dinner at Big Racks BBQ in Grapevine.

Best barbecue in Dallas area right now is Pecan Lodge in the Farners Market near downtown Dallas. Though I like Main Street in Euless for the icon it is, it is not even close to what PL is putting out. Friend Dahveed has done Hard 8, says it is "pretty good" but didn't rave. I trust his judgment. The original Sonny Bryan's on Harry Hines is still pretty good brisket IF you get there for the early cuts. Off the Bone near downtown is also pretty good. Railhead in Fort Worth was also pretty good at last visit (been several years).

I read some of the articles in the D paper. Based on where I'll be it looks like Bartley's in Grapevine north of DFW might be good.

Check out this map of bbq joints in and around Dallas-Ft Worth. http://www.communitywalk.com/tx/texas_b ... map/280736" target="_blank

Here's a link to D magazine's BBQ restaurant list

http://directory.dmagazine.com/restaura ... y=Barbecue

Bartley's has a "D Best" rating. Should be a good joint.

Bartleys is just Ok, IMO.

I would personally spend a few $ or drive a little further and get something better. Hard 8 is close by and Euless Main.

D Magazine - whatever.

The Airport Hard 8 strikes me as style over substance. Great show for foreigners but no great chow. I hear the Stephenville location is much better.

Pecan Lodge is excellent by any standard but must include the caveat that much like Franklins in Austin the BBQ Cognoscenti currently favor more fat in their brisket than some prefer. State your preference for lean when ordering.

If you have to be by Love Field check Out Smokey Johns on West Mockingbird.

Big Al's @ Lemmon & Inwood is also in the Love Field area.

Katy Trail is worth a phone call on Thursday thru the weekend to confirm the Smoker is up & running.

Always consult the Full Custom Gospel BBQ. Most of the leg work has already been done!
