Hi guys! I've never been to Franklins, but I've heard a lot about the place, his YouTube videos, and TV appearances. I just got his book that came out a couple of weeks ago, and it's full of good information if you haven't had a chance to pick it up yet. It's not a recipe book either.

Anyway, I've noticed that he doesn't do chicken at his place from what I can tell. Any reason why? He doesn't mention it in his book either. I know he serves Turkey, and even in his book he only has one paragraph on Turkey, and it's like he forced himself to say a few words about it. I guess he's really just a beef and pork guy.

Not sure why he doesn't serve chicken. Also surprised he only puts a paragraph on turkey because the bird he served at the BBQ festival was outstanding

IMO, his turkey is the best thing on the menu. The brisket is good, but so is the brisket all over the Hill Country. But I've never had turkey that came close to Franklin's.

He probably doesn't do chicken because chicken counts as a vegetable in Texas

Went again yesterday and my first visit must have been an off day, because what I had yesterday was hands down the best brisket Ive ever tasted. Words cannot express how good it was. Oh and preordering is the way to go. I was in and out with my food in less than ten minutes!!

Going back to Houston (family) for Thanksgiving...and plan to make a pit stop in Austin for two days.
I definitely want to taste what most of you are considering to be the best Brisket in all the lands.
And I think I will appreciate Franklins more if I go the traditional route of standing in line for three hours.
But tell me more about this "preordering" concept...sounds like the ticket.

Also, any other suggestions on where else I should indulge myself?
And I am not shy when it comes to TexMex.

Oh well, I found out about "preordering" at a different site and where I should go for TexMex.
Now I can stop holding my breath...

I know Austin (and San Antonio) is a TexMex hotspot as well with a long history but I am not familiar with the places.
Maybe some folks will hop on this thread and fill us in.

We were stationed in San Antonio for two years with the Army. We never found Austin to be a Mexican food destination, although things may have changed. San Antonio, YES. There are numerous wonderful Mexican restaurants there. La Fonda on Main is an old favorite.

Austin serves "Tex-Mex" which is not the same as Mexican food.
I've been to SA many times and have never found a place that serves edible Mexican food..for instance, true Mexican food is not spicy or hot AT ALL, they hate hot peppers in Mexico..Texas is where the heat is applied!
Not harshing on SA, I love the place, just hate the food!
As to where to eat Tex-Mex in Austin, there too many to list and most are outstanding, just get in there and order up something..

sounds like your the type who thinks taco-bell is real Mexican food.

Mexico is no different from China. Just like China has food running from very mild (Cantonese) to spicy and somewhat hot (Szechuan), so does Mexico. Regional cuisine varies a lot. I love to cook traditional Mexican foods. I make my mole from scratch. I love cooking with the various chile peppers.

LMAOROF, have to agree with ya here Twoguysbbq, I been on the roads from here in the RGV to Colorado and back a few times, ain't no town in America that has as much or as good Mexican food as San Antonio, not even here by the border. There sure aint none in Austin.

Austin for tex mex, El Patio on Guadalupe street, an Austin original....
