Geting a rub to market
I dont know if theis the right spot to ask this question. If not let me know so I can ask it in the right spot. I have a rub that is ready to be bottled. Dose anyone have any info that could help me get to the next stage. I would like to bottle it and atleast be able to sell it to friends, or at comps to people that like my bbq. My ultimate goal is to get into stores. I have no clue what the frist step is. please help.

My 2 cents.
Buy some bottles off the internet, print up some inexpensive labels on you computer printer and mix up a batch of rub and get after it.
Try to get somebody other than your family and friends to buy it - twice.
If successful, you can build from there.
Good luck and don't expect to make any $.
-> Gettin into stores is a whole 'nuther ball game, gotta walk before you run.

Thanks Gator. I agree with the walking frist. I'm just curious about what it would take to get into stores. Might not even be something I want to deal with. Already looking at blttles and lables on net now. I've got a small following of people now.

Depends on what type of stores you are wanting to get in:
Small Mom and Pop stores are pretty open to carrying products from local producers without much fuss.
Higher end single owner stores want you to have some credibility and been in business for a while. Most expect you to carry liability insurance, have UPC codes, have the products tested by the State of Texas and use Nutritional Panels. Figure at least $1,000 - $2,000 per product just to get started.
Chain stores demand all of the above + only successful/proven products, expect lower margins, slotting fees, plan on spending lots of $ to be successful here. Must go through distributors.
What it takes is a lotta time, a lotta money and lots of effort...and like I said, don't expect to make much $, if you are doing it for the money, invest in a good mutual fund instead.

I know Ive been asking alot of questions. I'm just trying to cover all my bases. I want to make sure my rub is my rub. I don't want anyone to say I've got this rub already. I'm not looking to make it rich just make something great. Thanks again for all your help. I will start with freinds and family and see where it goes from here.

Old Dog - friends and family always like it.
Find folks who don't have a stake in you and get honest feedback. The best measure is if you can get total strangers to be repeat customers.

Well - I hoping, but not counting on it. Plan A is to win the Lottery, Plan B is to get rich selling BBQ Rubs, Plan C is to work hard and die poor.
