You guys do your own preserves??

Postby Russ » Tue Aug 30, 2016 8:20 pm

I do my own preserves because I find them better than bought stuff. I do these
Home made tomatoe sauce
Plum sauce
Curried onions
Gherkins
Mint sauce
Salmon
Black boy peaches
Chilly relish
Chilly sauce ( hot)
And a few other things.

What do you preserve??

We used to put up pear preserves, pear mince meat, peach preserves, pepper jelly and prickly pear jelly until the Wiffy's health got bad. Now we don't have the time or see the need any more but we miss it a lot. :dont:

Man o man you do go hard out. That's some work there man. I sometimes think preserving is an old fashioned thing and isn't being done much. I keep saying to my son who devours my curry onions, ill show you how to make them. He always says I'm not making them while you can,lol

I don't do much canning, I don't have all the needed stuff. I usually make jerky and dried sausage though. I make pickled okra and cucumbers from time to time, but small batches (since I don't have the ability to can them properly). I would love to make my own fruit preserves though. Strawberry is a personal favorite. Never done it, but I want to.

Nothing like home made jam, like my fave raspberry then strawberry. We have 16 strawberry plants in at the moment. It's unbelievable the natural sweetness of self grown berrys. Grand kids head straight for the strawberries when they come here. We 3rd day of spring so expect berries in 6 weeks or so. I'm going to freeze any surplus and make my own jam .
