Well, I have never tried to smoke one...yet.
I usually marinade or season it up with some rub or Montreal Steak seasoning, then grill direct for about 10 mins per side, then indirect until about 145 internal.
With that being said, I have only done a few, and there are some references to Santa Maria style marinades, that I have not looked into yet.
I will do that and report back as soon as I can.
OK... here is a quick reference to the meat and one way to go about it. Note they do not go as high internal as my family makes me...
One more thing, if you have Paul Kirks book Championship BBQ turn to page 263.

I've never smoked one, only grilled. But here's a link to a thread about smoking them.

A friend of mine from another board that lives in California almost dropped dead after finding out I smoked a Tri Tip
Smoking didn't give the crust you get from direct grilling but the flavor was still there. Just a little bit of a rubbery texture with smoking.
Here's a link she sent me. If you can get past the funny mustache it might help. http://www.santamaria.com/visit/section ... ideo.html#
I have a Tri Tip thawing as we speak. I'm using the Santa Maria seasoning. Grilled direct till the internal temp is about 140ish.
3 Tbs. non iodized salt
1 Tbs. granulated garlic
1/2 teas. dried parsley
1/4 teas. black pepper (medium grind)
