identify this wood please

Postby riseabove50 » Mon Jul 13, 2015 9:20 am

hey guys, had two trees recently cut down behind my house. one i know what an elm and several have said it was a trash tree and not to harvest any for smoking, so i didn't. but another smaller tree next to it was also cut down and left, but i don't know what type it was. fortunately there were two others just like it still standing next to it. here are some pics. can you help me identify this wood and whether it would be good for smoking?

thanks all

Looks like a Bradford Pear to me. I've used it before in the pit. It's a non-fruit bearing tree, but from what I have read, it can be used the same as fruit-bearing pear trees -light smoke flavor.

Don't know if this will help or not but I ran out and snapped these of my Pear Tree.

I would suggest that you let it cure first - - - I gave my oldest son some small logs from a couple of non-bearing pear trees I had and he let them cure/dry for a year and then used them - - - - I've eaten meat that he's done over the pear wood and I liked it - - - he seems to like it also and uses it often. I think I'd start out with just a little for flavor also and not use it as the primary heat. I'm sure others here have more experience with it so hopefully they will advise you.

yea i think it definitely needs to age for a while. it's just sitting out in the field not a week old from being cut. i didn't want it to go to waste or someone throw it away. i'll collect it and put it on the rack and check it out next summer.

thanks again gents.

Best use for BP is burning, IMHO. Trash tree on a par w hackberry.
