KAM, man, you need to start a thread about how to get your wife to let you keep so much fuel around!

It's all I can do to keep mine off my backside with a cord of oak and few bags of charcoal!

Image

 It helps if your wife likes to cook as much as you and can at any time fire up the cookers and use them on her own. She is also my competition partner. :D

My God, Sir. You are my new idol.

I have to stick with Kingsford out here in California - I can find Mexican Mesquite charcoal (more of a bag of charred miniature logs) very cheap at Mexican grocery stores (cheaper than Kingsford), but you cannot cook every thing with that much mesquite..... I think.....

A little heresy, ditch the charcoal altogether and just run with straight wood. I've even given it up for starter fuel (only) since I found I could reliably get fatwood sticks from Academy.

I can see it now, a new Sam Elliott commercial on TV during the Souper Bowl, doling out the adviCe in pure Hollywood bass tones:

"WOOD. IT'S WHAT YOU COOK WITH FER DINNER."
BE WELL, BUT NOT DONE
Hank: "Do you know how to jumpstart a man's heart with a downed power line?"
Bobby: "No."
Hank: "Well, there's really no wrong way to do it."

Yes Sir, Maybe I should have stated that. I start all my cooks with B&B and then it's oak or mesquite or even pecan. All depends on whats going on the cooker.

Same here. Quick coal base with the Chefs Select then Oak and Hickory. Chefs Select and wood chunks for my grill.

Totally agree. In older times, I cooked exclusively with South Texas Live Oak as a base - charcoal briquettes were something you used to grill 100 hot dogs at a birthday party.

Sadly, wood is simply harder to find in a dense urban environment - especially way out west. you are either paying $12 for a small bundle of pine, or driving several hours to stock up. Recently, I stocked up on a drive from Texas to California - and promptly had about 100 lbs of nice oak confiscated at the agricultural checkpoint.

I'm kind of running on charcoal or mesquite for the heat, and throwing in overpriced wood chips for the flavor (mostly applewood or pecan, lately). At least I haven't been reduced to particle board yet...

I realize this is an old thread but I’m needing to find the best place to buy Chef’s Select. I work in the Beaumont area and drive thru #k.a.m. ‘s neck of the woods every day. So far, I haven’t been able to find it. Any suggestions would be appreciated.
Thanks

For briquettes - Kingsford Blue because it's readily available, RO work well for me, but Stubbs is my favorite.

Lump: I burn RO lump with no issues. I just make sure I pick out bags that haven't been crushed in the pallet.
