Just a thought from a beginner
I was sitting here wondering if it is possible to place throughly soaked wood chucks directly onto the burner grates for smoking? Like I said, this is a question from a newbie.

Hey there, I think you will get varied opinions on this. In my opinion, I try Not to soak chunks or chips because I feel you get alot of steam as well as some smoke.
I would get one of those smoke boxes and try chips or small chunks before soaking, but again that's just mho.
If u keep ur temp low enough, and high enough, you won't have the chunks catch fire or smolder out.
Good luck man

If you hit on something that works for a gasser, I would LOVE to know.
Once saw a TV guy throw what amounted to a big branch directly on a gas grill, but we have never been brave enough to try.

I will most defiantly post once I find something that works for me. Like I said, I'm mostly new to all of this "fancy" crap as my wife likes to put it. I look at it as flavor enhancement and turning into a grilling geek. Oh yeah, she called my that too. I just looked at her and smiled big...haha

Re: Just a thought from a beginner
I got a 3 burner plus a sear burner Weber Genisis. I used to add a 2 to 3" round hunk of wood about 8" long. I'd place it on the burner deflectors between the first burner and the sear burner. Id place the meat on the opposite end with those burners off. Worked pretty good for giving the meat a light smokey flavour. Once the wood caught on fire Id turn those two burners down some to compinsate for heat from the burning wood.
Don't use my gasser anymore tho.
