Chuck roast with spg rub on jealous devil lumpcoal

Postby Copasspupil » Sun Aug 06, 2017 5:29 pm

So never done chuck roast before but read a few threads here on it. Trying a new lumpcoal - Jealous Devil - I read about on the cali BBQ forum so I tried it out. I had previously used green egg and royal oak lump and I was very happy with the size, density of the lump and very little dust the bag came in. Good smoke ring and though I smoked it for 7-8 hrs, it's was juicy and full of flavor. On to ribs for later this week...

Wow, I've come VERY CLOSE many times to ordering that Jealous Devil but the $$$ turned me off unfortunately.

I too use Royal Oak Lump religiously and LOVE IT.

How do you think it stacks up against the RO ??
Price/userfriendly ??

Roast looks awesome !!

I bought a pallet after I had purchased 2 35 lb bags from them on amazon. I had a great conversation with the CEO of JD. That man is impressive to talk to, very passionate about his product and hates to get bad reviews. That being said, comparing the two. The JD is more dense lump, larger chunks, and seem to last longer than the RO. The heat was very even for hours compared to RO. It does seem to take a little longer to light but not much.

Thanks for the compliments on the roast.

I'm still learning about fire pits vs a pellet. This summer was good for BBQ education. I got my Santa Maria grill down and wanted to get the smoker down. For now, lumpcoal is easier to control the temp vs adding the oak to the firebox.

That roast looks great. :salut: :chef:
Wish I could find some decent lump around here. All we got is Cowboy brand. Lots of dust and very inconsistent size pieces.

I initially bought mine thru amazon but if you are interested, he sells it by the pallet at a discounted price. Might work if you went with people. A pallet is 100 of them.
