Theoretically, I guess you could pour some charcoal in the belly of the beast and set it alight, turning it into a burning barrel of death and frying all the wiring in it... not advisable, they are not a dual use technology.

There are some conventional sidebox stick burners you can both smoke with and then build a fire in the belly of the chamber and grill on them. But you'd want to stick with something built out of 1/4" or thicker steel to last for a while, otherwise, over time you'd burn it up just like old Webers eventually get used up and going to see their roller milled counterparts up in the sky.

I'll join the chorus here. Every pellet grill manufacturer I've looked at says ONLY cooking pellets. No charcoal, no ground up wood chips, etc...

Note also that cooking pellets are different than heating pellets. Cooking pellets are made with only compression to hold them together. Heating pellets use adhesives to bind the pellets together that are toxic if used to smoke food.
