Clean Burn ? Using Minion Method

Postby bbqbrisket » Sun Sep 09, 2018 7:31 am

I've been using a version of the "Minion Method" in my offset; mainly because I don't want to get up in the middle of the night.
I've got a new and different one now and while the temp gets up pretty quick, it can take up to 2 hours to get a clean burn.
My method has been to use a square charcoal basket with 4 sticks vertically in each corner. I also put a larger chunk close to the bottom on one side on the outside of the basket for later smoke as it burns down. I start with a charcoal chimney starter. When hot it goes on top of the basket.

Is there a way to reduce the time to achieve the "clean burn"

appreciate the input.

Minion method dictates a slow fire so the two sound incompatible to me.
You can get hot fast but not with Minion.

Maybe you can leave the firebox open a while longer, to allow it to start a clean burn before you close everything up. I use a similar method, in my UDS, and have a clean burn within 20 minutes.

How about going Franklin style open door & adding a cheap USB Fan??
I have seen a magnetized one on Amazon I would like to try.
