Tel-Tru

Postby Michael0506 » Tue Jan 08, 2019 7:54 pm

Hello all,

I bought a new LoneStar Grillz branded tru-tel thermometer for a restored LSG offset smoker! I also bought a thermo pro TP20 Wifi and I have done 2 long smokes with them! The TP20 always seems 30-50 degrees higher, so is the Tel Tru usually accurate out of the box or maybe the TP20 is off!

Any input thanks, I may just get a Fireboard thermometer, the TP20 is good but I don’t like that it doesn’t stay lit when watching the temps and it seems way off!

My Tru Tel is pretty accurate, I did a boil test at 212 and it was real close. My original thermometer was almost 50 degrees higher. Put both in a pot of boiling water and you will find out which one is off. If you have a trailer pit, I always unscrew my Tru Tel and place it in a stable area during traveling. I have heard the bouncing of the trailer sometimes affects the the readings.Hopes this helps.
How bout some more beans Mr.Taggert? I'd say you've had enough!

Mine was dead on accurate, just like a new car you could have a lemon, but the smart $ is on that Tel-Tru

test them for yourself, water boils at 212 and ice water is 32, the water boil temperature will change a little depending on your altitude, but will be close enough so you can tell which thermometer is accurate.

Unless you are measuring at the or nearly at the exact same place in the cooker, the difference in readings may come down to location of probes.

OK all,

Here is the Tel-Tru, ThermoPro TP20 and M4 readings in Hot and Cold test! I can't tell on the Tel-Tru what the cold reading is!

How do they look, for some how during the cooks the ThermoPro is always between 20-50 higher and dont know if its the T-T of thermoPro that is off but the testing seems the same!

T-T hot and cold

ThermoPro both probes seemed about even!

I should have said the 32 degree check might be out of range for many thermometers, but it looks pretty good on the hot side... the thermos pro looks good though.

Thanks,

I assume the Tel-Tru on the cold looks ok, no way to tell!

I guess the T-T and thermopro are correct, might be the wifi, I am only about 30ft from living room to smoker when cooking!

Remember, the cold side water remains at 32 degrees until all the ice has melted. Only after the last piece of ice has melted will the temperature rise above 32 degrees. So i would say your thermo pro is good

Thanks, So does the Tel-Tru look good as well?

Would the Fireboard be worth getting for a better reading or is the ThermoPro good enough!

I would say the TEl-Tru is close enough for having a clue of what the temperature is at that specific location on your cooker. I am not sure why or what your goal is for temperature accuracy. I have done several temperature checks using different methods to determine the location of hot spots, using biscuits once the grill it up to temperature, also using a cork to hold the thermometer probe away from the shelving in mid air to achieve a better temperature reading, but in the end cooking meat is somewhat like hand grenades or horseshoes any where close will work.. :D
