Well, last week I made some ABT's and brought a few samples to work. Now one of the girls here wants me to make a bunch for July 4 and wants to know how much it would cost.
What would you guys charge for this?
In the past, I have figured up the price to make them and if I remember right, it was around a buck a piece.
What do you guys think about $1.50 or $1.75 each? That sound fair? Need to charge more? Less?
Also, if I prep these things early, will they hold over a day or two until I cook them?
I know that I asked the price question once before in another forum, but it's been awhile back and I really don't remember what they suggested.
Price per ABT?

First, How many is a bunch???Then you have to figure your time to go pick up food at the store, time for prep, time for cooking, and time for delivery, cost of food, cost of charcoal, spices. At 1 dollar cost just for food and at 1 dollar profit each, you would have to make a lot of them to be worth your while to do them.
If you do 3 dozen of them, is $36 worth a day of your time and cost of charcoal and spices. It's not like you are catering a meal and doing these at an extra charge for snacks. Where you would be smoking other meats for her and doing these at the same time. Then I could see a couple bucks apiece but not as just doing them alone. JMHO

Yeah, what's a bunch? I went and looke dup that thread, and it was anywhere between 1.25 and 2 a piece.
Do you plan to make them while you are cooking yourself some food?
Yes you can make them a day or so ahead of time.
Biggest thing for me is...how many, and would you do it while cooking something else?

Do you stuff the peppers from the end, or cut them down
the middle and stuff (giving you 2 halfs?)
I cut down the middle and my costs are about 40 cents per
pepper or 80 cents for whole.
I've thought about selling them in q joint I hoped to open,
and pretty much decided the time making them leads to
a not so cost effective decision. To be honest, I'd want
2 bucks per half to be worth my time.
But, they sure as heck get people talking. And it's kinda
like crack, once you get em hooked, they'll pay anything.
Now that said, if you had an assembly line that put together
a giant pot of cream cheese and your meat (pulled pork here)
and had an assembly line working, it might be profitable in
large quantities. But small amounts....pretty much got to do that
just for the love of it.

She is talking like quite a few. I think that she is talking one of those foil roasting pans full.
After I posted the question last night, I got to thinking... Last time I made them, I made 40. I didn't think that I was ever gonna get to the last one! I just don't think that it would be worth the money. I just need to learn to say no!
Havent seen the can of cream cheese. Will have to look into that one!!!

Or you could always teach her how to make one, and she could be the hero at her party! A real mentor always wants to teach! Yeh Chuck!

'Course not. After all, she's got you. (Sucker.)
I'm bettin' she won't pay more that $50 for that pan of ABTs, if that. I don't know, but it's gotta be less than $1 each. I guarantee she'll gripe and moan you're takin' advantage of her if you try and get more. If so, send her to the store for the frozen poppers. Not as good as ABTs, but cheaper.

I wouldn't pay a lot, either. They're too small to be worth it to me!
The average person doesn't think about the time and labor involved. I'll make 'em for me and mine, or to take to a party, but I'd be hard pressed to make 'em for pay.
I say plead "no time" and teach her to make 'em. Spend the time on your family. Or ABTs for yourself.

Chuck, do like Laura said and play teacher. First lesson should be a homework assignment -- give her an ABT and tell her to take it home, deconstruct it to see how it's made, and then put it back together so that she will know how to make them for herself.
Remember hands-on training is the best way to learn.
