You guys make scotch eggs?

Postby Russ » Sat Aug 20, 2016 8:01 pm

Apparently I don't make them enough, according to my family, they just love them , hot or cold. I guess it's an English thing but some of you may have tried these beautiful gems.

You hard boil a free range egg, peel then set aside, now I use sausage meat, I lay some cling film down on the bench, I put a dollop of sausage meat in the middle wet damp hands flatten out to a circle that you think will cover the eggs. About 1/4 thick meat. I put a small amount of tomato relish on the meat but not right out to the side. Dip egg in flower then take the meat and wrap it around the egg sealing it as you go with damp hands. Roll in breadcrumbs. Deep fry. Hot or cold they are scrummy.
Pics to follow tomorrow .

I make Scotch Eggs but mine are a little different. I used a soft boiled egg, peeled and wrapped in pork sausage (about 1/4" layer of sausage). Then sprinkle with my rib rub and smoke on the smoker at 275 for about 45 minutes (depending on how the smoker cooks).
They are excellent!

Scotch eggs are the BUSINESS!!! I used to have them for breakfast at the British pub/PX on our little camp in Illidza, Sarajevo, after my guard shift in the morning.

Thanks for this recipe Russ!

Russ,

I worked on a drilling rig several years ago in the Gulf of Mexico that had British Captains on it. And these scotch eggs were on the menu most Sundays along with the usual fried chicken. I have had them many times and your right, they are good.

That's cool, I put a small layer to tomato relish on the meat before wrapping the egg up, gives a nice sweet taste to the morsel.

These were what I would call standard fare. Egg wrapped in pork sausage then breaded and fried. But always a wonderful treat offshore on a Sunday.

I say it was pork, it was ground breakfast sausage, with a layer wrapped around the egg, then breaded. That is usually mostly pork anyway I believe.
