Pear Mincemeat? "YUP"

Postby OldUsedParts » Sat Jul 02, 2016 8:11 am

Although I never cared for mincemeat pie, one year I had an abundance of canning pears and my Hill Country neighbor told me about Pear Mincemeat. Well, what did I have to loose except time and ingredients so I made some. Ever since then I can't wait for Pear Season and for the Holidays when Mincemeat fits the bill (and menu also). Anyhow, here is the recipe, if any of Y'all are interested.

I have always cut this recipe in half but here's the original, as given to me.

PEAR MINCEMEAT

8 cups firm pears
1 lb. seedless raisins
2 orange, juice and rind
juice of 1/2 lemon
1/4 cup vinegar
3 cups sugar
1/2 tsp cinnamon
1/2 tsp allspice
1/2 tsp ground cloves
½ tsp nutmeg

Chop pears fine; chop raisins and orange rind through the medium blade of the food chopper. Add remaining ingredients and cook over low heat, stirring occasionally until thickened. Remove from heat and seal in hot sterilized jars. Makes 4 quarts-

Hope you like it Papa Tom - - - it is real good but not something we do often.
This is our favorite thing to do with canning pears.
Pear Relish
• 12 pounds hard pears -- about 40
• peeled,cored, and quartered
• 4 green peppers-seeded & quartered (jalapenos seeded and devined do well here)
• 2 pounds onions -- peeled & quartered
• 5 cups white vinegar
• 4 cups sugar
• 2 1/2 tablespoons salt
• 2 tablespoons whole mixed pickling spice
• 2 tablespoons turmeric
Run pears, onions and peppers through food grinder. Drain off all liquid.
Combine vinegar, sugar, salt, pickling spice and turmeric. Boil 10 minutes. Add pears, onions, and peppers. Boil 15 minutes. Spoon into hot sterilized jars and seal quickly. This is very good with meats or vegetables.
Yield: 8 or 9 pints.
