Looking for a good tartar sauce recipe

Postby Longhornturfguy » Tue Jan 25, 2011 8:38 am

I can't seem to find a good tartar sauce recipe around and thought I would post the question on here. Big fisherman here and have a few fish frys yearly but the store bought stuff isn't very good. Thanks

Mayo, horse radish, chopped gerkins (pickle) and a little lemon juice. Sometimes add a squirt of d'jorn mustard. No real recipe. I start start with a cup of mayo, add some chopped Gerkins till it "looks" about right, then horse radish until it has the level of heat you want then a squirt of lemon juice to add a little tart (also helps it keep). Some folks add things like capers, parsley and chives. I've also seen a version that had bits of hard boiled egg in it.

Here is my favorite is a copy cat of the Kings inn tarter Sauce in Rivera Texas

King’s Inn Tartar Sauce

1 1/2 cups Miracle Whip salad dressing

1/2 cup real mayonnaise

1/2 large yellow onion, finely chopped

1-2 (seeded and finely chopped) serrano or jalapeño peppers to taste

4 boiled eggs, shredded

1/4 cup chopped pimentos, drained well

1/2 cup cracker meal or 1 stack of saltine crackers, crushed

2 ounces bell pepper, shredded

2 stalks celery, shredded

2 ounces garlic, minced

1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce

1 teaspoon anchovy paste

DIRECTIONS: In a food processor, chop all of the ingredients separately and then combine. Mix all ingredients and chill.

Lot's of ingredients but well worth the time (and money). By far. the best Tartar I've ever eaten. When I go to King's Inn I always buy some to bring home. Good enough to just eat on crackers!
I never have figured out how to shred a boiled egg. :dont:
