Pecan Rub Simple Taste Test

Postby Gator » Mon Apr 13, 2015 1:34 pm

Please vote for the rub you like MOST on a simple out of the bag taste test. Also, room for comments below.

This is a PECAN RUB - please keep in mind we want feedback on what you think - please don't hold back, direct feedback (positive or negative) really helps.

Well bummer, I was the unlucky winner of the mixed up shipment. I had two #3 bags and a #1. As for my thoughts, #3 tastes like John Henry's Pecan Rub on steroids! I think this is a winning combination for sure. John Henry's Pecan Rub is really popular and I have always loved it since the Faulder brothers introduced me to it. It's great on everything non-beef. Yours has more flavor so I can see me replacing my John Henry's with this for sure. I can see mixing this with your Baayum for amazing results. As for #1, it has an aroma and after taste that kinda puts me off. I can't figure out what it is, but I can't see myself buying this one.

Thanks for letting me taste these two rubs. I'll see if I can't get some smoked goodness this week sometime.

Number 3 is my pick, love the color and the taste is the best of the three by far. Great aftertaste! Would rate this above J. Henry rub. # 1 was real good and good taste with a light aftertaste. # 2 was a lil over powering for me. Going to do some ribs or chops with em this weekend. Hook me up with some Sucklebuster Nuttinbutt Sweet. :salut:

Number 3 was my overall favorite. Number 1 had a strange, almost off-putting aftertaste in there somewhere. Number 2 was good, but had some bite. The level of spice in these I'd almost like to see divided into two rubs- a spicy and a sweet, because two of the three had a lil' kick that sneaks up on ya. When I think about these rubs, I think about what people like my wife, who prefers sweet over spicy. Having the option would certainly be nice, even if only to layer them if needed. Anyway, I digress. Number 3 for me. Loved the color.

Received my samples today. #1 smelled good, just kinda plainish (help from my 7 and 9 year old for the description lol). #2 we took a nice big smell and wow what a kick we all sneezed lol, but smelled great (I like spicy). #3 smelled wonderful as well. Going to try to get do some ribs this weekend and report back with my fav of the taste. Right now for me it'll be a toss up between 2 and 3.

#1 had an ok flavor but was a bit on the mild side
#2 was a bit over powering with a good kick of heat
#3 was just right and has my vote!!!

Ok - I brought my samples to work today and had a few coworkers do the out-of-the-bag test. Results below:

image.jpg

I've never tried a pecan rub before, so I'm not sure what one should really taste like. Although #3 was my favorite, I wasn't crazy about any of them. I really didn't care for #1 and couldn't place the flavor I was getting, but it was almost like a bag of BBQ potato chips sweetened with sugar. Maybe a pecan rub just isn't for me. :dont: Maybe once I try them on BBQ it will be different. The jury is still out. :D

Got mine in the mail today. Was on my way to BBQ Island, so took it with me. Had three of the people that would be selling it taste it. Results including mine were; all four of us liked #3 the best. Two people would like it mixed 3 parts #3 to 1 part #2. Second best would be #2, just too hot for the everyday user. Coming in third was #1, everyone felt this was too sweet.
Will do a slab of ribs this weekend, and post those results.

I got my sample of #2 today. I really like it. I love the heat. It's not quite as hot as Baayum, but similar. The heat comes on slow like a habanero. I would buy this for sure. I still would go for #3 over them all. Some folks don't like sweet as much, so this rub would be a good one for those folks. Kroger has spares and pork butts on sale this week for $.99 a pound, so I'll stock up and give these a try.

#2... Nice heat but not much flavor ... Kinda blah
#3.. Good overall flavor... Needs more heat will try it on pork tenderloin... The best of the three

The burro finally made it to Corpus 8)

Didn't care for Number 1

Like the heat on Number 2 but wasn't too sure on the flavor. My traveling companion suggested we cut it some (LOL - she is not big on heat and I told her not to try it) and use it on Blacked Redfish or Hot Wings.

Number 3 was our favorite

Will try on some spares in a few days

1---Went nowhere for us, no kick. The boss (wife) thought it had an anise flavor?)

2--I liked the flavor and the heat, the boss thought it was a little too hot.

3--A little too sweet for me, the boss said its her #1 choice.

I am on the fence between # 2 and #3, waiting for meat test. The boss has the power so it's a vote for #3! :D :salut:
