Beans vs No beans?

Postby PapaG » Mon Aug 23, 2010 2:27 pm

I have cooked both ways. Traditional Texas Red has no beans. Cheated and used bean water before. I have severed pinto beans on the side and also rice too. I like pintos in mine.

What you think?. A college group I was a sponsor on had a annual cook off They won 3rd one year and 1 st another year with my versions. We won with pintos and rice on the side, most people liked it with the sides. Crackers too. . But some all adult groups had some wild stuff, and had their own class.

When I had kids I would cook with "japlanos" with holes punched with a fork and then removed the peppers, cut back on the peppers.

What do you all do/like?

I do have a different one for chili dogs.

It's personal preference. I like beans in my chili but when I cook in chili cookoffs there are no beans allowed. I also like cheese in there, but cookoffs are strictly about the chili meat. No right or wrong way if cooking for yourself. Cook it how you like it! :)

beans found their way into chili as a means to stretch the chili and make it go further I believe.
So I guess, what it all boils down to is how poor you were when you were growing up.

I like beans in my chili, but then again, I'm also a tight :censor: german!

You guys had to remind me of our household feud

My bride wants her chili without beans

I haven't met a bean I didn't like and I like beans in mine - cheese on top, a few chopped raw onions, and crumpled up crackers as well :D

I'll give you one guess who wins the bean/no bean chili at our house 8)

the missus is from the frozen tundra(minnesota) so she thinks beans are supposed to be in there. me being Texan for more than one generation, was taught no beans.
so therefore we usually have beans in our chili(the whole if momma ain't happy.. thing). now for comps, no beans. oh and the beans are red beans and pinto beans.

'Chili' has meat, peppers, aromatics (onions/garlic) and spices, and water.

Add in other stuff and it's 'chili with beans', chili stew, or some other concoction.
'Chilli' is some weird contraption with spaghetti noodles in it...

I like it both ways, but I agree with Mark. Once you add beans to Chili Con Carne it's not chili anymore, it's another dish all together and that's totally cool. I never get all worked up over it.
