Growing chili peppers

Postby Sterno » Mon Nov 30, 2009 6:25 am

I'm consuming large quantities of habaneros and jalapeños every week. They are not too easy to find over here and they are ridiculously expensive. So the solution to my problem is - grow your own chilies!

My original plan was to take few seeds from shop bought habaneros. Well I did so and sowed the seeds. Few days later nice little plants came up and started growing. Meanwhile I was reading everything I could about growing chilies indoors, so I ordered some seeds, few lights, fertilizers etc.

I got seeds of 30 different varieties now, 22 plants growing, germinating about a dozen at the moment and ready to plant another dozen or two as soon as I figure where to put them all...

Here's few pics of my progress.

Corner of my basement room where I got some chilies under fluorescent lights.

Sowed few more varieties exactly one month ago.

First habanero came up.

Close up the the cotyledons.

I realized I don't have enough lights, so got a 400W metal halide light. Moved some of the chilies under it.

One month later most of them starts to look like little plants already.

De Cayenne is absolutely the tallest so far. All annuum varieties are growing like mad.

Habaneros aren't too tall yet, but leaves look fine to me?

Another look at the habanero from a lower angle.

This seems like a fantastic hobby. I'm absolutely keen to spend some time every day with my little chilies.

Do you grow chilies? (Chilefarmer for sure does :) ) I guess in Texas you get perfect weather to do it outside? With the shorter summer here, I'm planning to grow them inside mostly and move maybe half of them outside in late spring time.

Any ideas, comments, tips?

Cheers,
Sterno

Hey, Sterno, I've run a couple of search warrants on set ups like yours. Oh, wait, those weren't peppers!
Pretty good start you have there on growing a bunch of your own ABT's and other good eats!

I've heard tell that when the old electric meter jumps sharply from the historic norm, a visit from the local constabulary is on the horizon.

Peppers look good to me. Can't get them to grow at my elevation, no matter what I try. Last attempt was with Stan's Texas Bird Peppers. Didn't even germinate. And I got farmer blood in my veins

Sterno, looking good. Habanero Chiles grow slower than the rest. And some Chile seed take forever to come up. CF :D
OK, get over it, you lost. God bless America

Had to look at the pepper pics again.

Looks like a nice sized glass of wine the day you took the first pic. Cabernet, Merlot, Chiati?

Hahaa, JamesB remembers my favorite wine! Yes, been drinking French Burgundy's lately, Pinot Noir indeed! :D

It's very nice and relaxing to pour myself a good glass of nice wine, go downstairs and spend some time taking care of my chilies...

Time for a little update. My chili growing ended up nearly as a disaster as the growing light power unit broke down and I found thousands of microscopic bugs or flies on them. Luckily enough the weather is warm enough to move the plants outside now.

Here's a few pics of the chilies from this morning.

Small red Habanero.

Jalapenos are ready for consumption.

Gigantic Ancho Pasilla.

Cayennes are ripening.

Lemon Drops still green.

These Cayennes are more than ready, some drying out already.

Thinking of sowing more seeds for outdoor growing. Let's see.

Very nice Sterno!!! Those growing lamps look very familiar from what I remember from friends houses in the 70's. Now I am not sure but, I am pretty sure there were no peppers under those lamps back them. LOL
