A couple weeks ago at the San Antonio Rodeo BBQ cookoff I had the opportunity to meet a BBQ Legend.
Mr. Johnny Trigg himself. He is one heck of a nice guy and took a few minutes of his time to talk to me.

He’s a great guy. He was with Fireman’s Fund Insurance Company and called on us frequently. We’d have a picnic every year and he’d come cook for us. I was his fishing guide, there was about a 5 acre lake there. We drank many beers together . I haven’t talked to him since he retired

OK, can't remember a whole lot but I did spend several hours standing beside the pit with him drinking beer. I remember the same stuff you can find on the internet. Things could have changed in his application now, this was late 80's through mid 90's. He of course used wood, stick burner. That could have changed. It was a trailer pit like the one in Ric's picture. He used Williams Rib Tickler, I remember that, Tiger Sauce, and squeeze Parkay margarine when he wrapped in foil. He also took the foil off before he was through cooking and put them back on. May have added honey at that point but I'm not sure. I do remember the 3 previously mentioned ingredients vividly.

He wraps with Parkay, brown sugar and honey. I have cooked against him several times and ran into him at Sams Club, he was buying ribs.Heck of a nice guy! He will take the time to talk and get a pic with everyone that asks, unlike some of the celebrity cooks.

LOL, oh yes, he's a talker. He was a " Special Agent" for Fireman's Fund back in the day. Heck of a nice guy. I still have a nice, soft leather pad he gave me with my name on it and the Fireman's Fund logo. Alas they are gone, Allianz now, like so many of the great companies

Have got to meet Myron and Big Moe (and came within a foot of running over Tuffy Stone with my truck when he darted out from behind a light pole in front of me at the Royal, good brakes and quick reactions saved his life), but Johnny is the home state hero that I really hope to meet one day. And that Jamie Gear pit is like a barbecue hot rod kegend.

Yeah Jamie builds Beautiful smokers, I’ve also met Jamie and had a couple beers with him. His cookoff spot was next to mine in Decatur where he won GC. I also met and talked to Big Moe in Decatur, he’s also down to earth and will talk to you. Big Moe and Jamie were also here in San Antonio but didn’t get a chance to talk to them.
I REALLY wanted a pic with Mr. Trigg because as Limey stated, He is The Godfather of BBQ.

Moe quit his day job finally and now tours full time and sells his rubs as I understand it. Saw him in June; took a 4th in chicken behind his first place, felt good that was at least closing on him.
