Old Smokey electric smoker

Anyone modded this smoker to add chips while smoking? I have to remove everything
and the drip pan just to add wood for all day smoking. Other than that its a great little 2 tray smoker.http://www.northerntool.com/shop/tools/product_200152274_200152274?cm_mmc=Google-pla-_-Food%20Processing-_-Smokers%20%2B%20Accessories-_-168705&ci_src=17588969&ci_sku=168705&ci_src=17588969&ci_sku=168705&gclid=CNGbp-aNm8ICFaGPMgodr1kA3w

No ideas huh? Well, from what I've read the first few hrs. are when the meat takes the smoke--after that it's more just maintaining constant temp.
With that said, a tray full of chips should last awhile when only using low heat setting. My son is a welder so I can have him cut me a an access door at
the bottom so I can add more chips if I want to go that route.

Igneous,

Been busy and traveling for the holidays, hence late response...

I don't think you would need to add a door. To extend smoke times, go with chunks of wood instead of chips, or even a mix of both.

However, my personal experience with those (2 of 'em) is that I never could get any good smoke at low settings, wasn't hot enough to make smoke. The older one was just on/off, plug in to cook. It made smoke fine. The newer Old Smokey my Mom had (mine now) would only make smoke on the three upper settings (of 6).

And, since the thermostat went out many moons ago. I had it here while trying to locate a replacement for her. Much older than current models, so Old Smokey was no help. So my current plan is to add lower and upper vents and a charcoal basket to make a small UDS out of it.

Know nothing about an Old Smokey so can't help you but, the meat picks up smoke as long as there is smoke present regardless of time or temp of he meat.

Good luck with it.

smoke pistol or a smoke daddy is the easy fix
or......
I built an external smoke box for the 22" charcoal OldSmokey so I could use it for cold smoking
or adding smoke to any cook in the OldSmokey
