Re: Plans for building an offset backyard smoker
Not a far as I wanted tonight but satisfied none the less. Firebox and chimney side are one. I didn't get the wheels tapped nor fastened. Lots of little stuff tomorrow to do

Looking mighty fine Copasspupil. It won't be long now you will be rolling smoke.
If you do not plan on a coal basket you may want to lay a piece of expanded metal on your wood grate to help keep your coals up and out of the ash.

Re: Plans for building an offset backyard smoker
I was planning on doing that after I read your comment to someone else's post. Prior I had no idea. I have expanded metal and wire steel mesh. What one would you choose?

#9 x 3/4" expanded metal works fine. No need in tacking it down because over time it will burn up and you can replace it easily.

Re: Plans for building an offset backyard smoker
I got the heat plates done, the upper tier grate shelf welded in and grinders some of my mig welding boogers off.
Tomorrow will be the wheels install, plasma cutter the chimney topper and last of the pit ends-half circle on the firebox side. The doors will be addressed probably on Saturday and finish any welding left over along with attaching the doors with the hinges. Monday will be the handles and get it ready for paint.

Re: Plans for building an offset backyard smoker
So far so good. I have to work on the doors a little bit. They opened up a little compared to the pit wall opening.

Re: Plans for building an offset backyard smoker
Ok I had the lids fixed. I could bend then but they would go right back. But I did get lids welded to the hinges, holes done for the thermometers. The pit lid had the handles and counter balance welded. The hook that holds the grease bucket is done also.

She looks great Copasspupil. I am glad you got your doors fixed the springing back is why I said you need to bend them farther than needed so when they do spring back they stop where you want them to.

Oh I understood what you said but even when I went beyond it, it would spring right back. Even the metal shop I took them to was surprised that they wouldn't hold that well even after they squeezed them.

Re: Plans for building an offset backyard smoker
Tell me about it. But it was the best 50 bucks I've spent on it actually. Almost done, waiting for three packages to come. The two signs for it, rod caps, a set of hinges and a new thermometer I broke today. Oh the joy. I will be firing it up this weekend to use. I can't wait.
