Plans for building an offset backyard smoker

Postby Copasspupil » Fri Oct 30, 2015 4:46 pm

Guys I'm having a little problem figuring out a couple of items for my build. I plan is 24" in diameter scheduled 10 .25 wall with a style similar to the Yoder Durango.

My firebox is 24x16
Cooking section 24x36 though the pipe is actually ~ 48" long
Cold smoking vertical 24x48
The exhaust pipe 8" ~ 12" long
Half moon 12.25"

Does the vertical cold smoking shaft change the overall length of the exhaust pipe? Does the exhaust pipe really need to be so wide? I used Felton's build calculator for this. Once I finish the drawing, I'll post it here.

Consider the vertical your exhaust and you just need an escape opening for the heat/smoke. On a 24" x 36" offset with a vertical I would use 5" or 6" exhaust and only be 6" to 12" tall.
I hope this helps. :D

Ok my time is slowing down and bought my pipe. Changed to making a 20x42 smoker 0.25 wall. 22" firebox onset. Pics in a couple of weeks.

Items that I can't figure out:

1. Chimney is 4.25" id or apparently they consider 4" pipe. If I go out 10" then up, does the horizontal section of the pipe have to be part of the overall pipe of the chimney?

If I calculated it correctly. The over length of the chimney is 24.375 "

2. Is there a difference in quality of temp gauges?

3. Where do you guys buy your supplies from for making the handles, grates, hinges and caster wheels

Finally made some progress on the pit. All the steel was bought last week, other supplies earlier the week before. It was time to plasma cutter the stuff.

I got off work this morning and welded up the chimney section to the left end and put section to fire box side and the fire box is done. I'm taking that to the sandblast shop now and will finish the frame today.

Two questions:
1. Do people use flat stock for the side of the fire box door frame?

2. Pit door cover. I was planning on using 1.5" flat stock on the outside frame to seal in the heat. Do I need an inside one as well?

Thanks
Dan

First of all, thanks for the kind words. No its not my first time welding. First time was back in 01 restoring a 66 mustang fastback, santa maria grill I made last year and this one... I love to learn something and work with my hands. Welding to me is more forgiving than woodworking for myself, but it's way heavier.

Next week should be fun. After it comes back from the sandblasting shop, I need to focus on the inside of the pit and firebox. I have the following to do:
Grinding the boogers off
Welding the sections together
Making the heating plate
The main section grate - stainless grates - come Monday.
Shelf system, handles, gauges and add the doors and hinges
I'm using this ultra high temp paint. I used it on my santa maria grill:

I forgot about my old landcruiser FJ40 too. It was after the mustang as I wanted a hunting rig. Roll bar, custom bumpers tire carrier and extra basket I did. This is wear I really enjoyed welding. Making stuff out of nothing.

I'd like to find a 67 coupe and build a track racer.

Update
1. Took the pit chimney and firebox to the sandblaster today. It looks much better

2. Welded the frame to the bottom plates

3. Welded the pit to the frame

Tomorrow I'll get the wheels on the bottom of frame, finish up the welding to the inside of the pit itself, chimney side to pit and see what else I can do.

Not a far as I wanted tonight but satisfied none the less. Firebox and chimney side are one. I didn't get the wheels tapped nor fastened. Lots of little stuff tomorrow to do
