new smoker build
Hey everyone, starting a smoker build. Im starting with my outdoor gourmet smoker grill combo.
Im keeping as much as I can from this one, I plan on building a gravity feed insulated smoker. The smoking chamber is big enough and in good shape so im keeping that. Im going to build a 1in sq tube frame to go around the chamber and im going to insulate it with mineral wool. I also am keeping the majority of the fire box and going to turn it into a ash box. So far all I have done is tore down and cut up the smoker and made as many flat pieces as I could that wernt burned out or rusted out.
Im going to try and spend less than $200 on this build. I have quite a bit of scrap around work and plenty of 1in sq tubing. For my fire box I found a piece of 13in 5x5 1/2 in thick square tubing that im going to cut in half and cut into angle iron and weld all 4 pieces together to make a 10x10x6.5 in box, my other thought would be cut it down and make 8x8x6.5 not sure if 10in would be to big (my cooking chamber is 16wx24dx28t ish) and the grate on the bottom will be made from 1/2 sucker rod we have laying around. The transfer tube will be 5x3 3/16s. I also got 3 3/4in ball valves for air control (2in ball vale is crazy expensive and 3 3/4 should move as much or more air) and 1in x 1/8 nomex seal. Pretty excited for this build i hope to get it done in 2-3 weeks if anyone has suggestions please feel free other wise enjoy some pics as i get them. Please excuse my horrible grammer and my bad drawing.
Also wanted to add I want to keep my water pan, all of the gravity feeds I have seen none of then have water pans. I plan on keeping mine as i dont tend to do alot of meat at once and i like the help keeping temp i just get tired of re filling it so im going to do a gravity feed on the water also.

Re: new smoker build
Got my fire box started turned the 5x4.5 in tubing into a 10x9in 6.25 tall and 1/2 thick fire box. Gotta straighten up the top and build my 1/2in sucker rod grate and build my transfer tube that's tomorrow's project.

Re: new smoker build
Got some more progress done I got some slots cut in my fire box to allow airflow but not charcoal fall into my transfer tube. I also got my transfer tube cut and welded on
I also got my charcoal grate built and it's 5/8 sucker rod not 1/2 but better. Also got a adapter plate cut out and welded on it adapts my charcoal chute witch is 5x5 on top and 8x8 at the base. The taper is suppose to help keep the carcoal from bridging.
Got the charcoal chute started but I won't get to work on it for the next few days hopefully fridaynill get more done.

Good Lord that would take forever to fill and about 3 10lb spools. I have some more of that piple, I'm going to cut filler pieces out of and scab over it once I clean off the slag.

What part has you scratching your head? It would look better if I we went scavageing parts and making do with what I have.

Brother, I am all about using what I got, I'm all about functionality over aesthetics anyways! I am trying to picture the charcoal feeder in action. I'm drawing a blank. Maybe not enough coffee this morning.

Re: new smoker build
The way it's suppose to work is you get the charcoal going in the bottom of the fire box and then fill the chute up. It won't burn above the transfer tube because it will have a lid and a gasket so there won't be any air in the chute. As it burns down the charcoal will slowly shift down into the area where there's air and ignite.
Should help with tending it won't have to keep adding chaocoal as often.

Oh.. OOOHHHKAAAAYYY!! I got it now. Thanks for that. I haven't seen anything like this so while trying to figure it out, my hamster fell off his wheel. Nifty concept there

Apparently it's been around for a while I had never seen it either till about month ago. I was going to just build a vertical insulated box and this changed my mind.

Re: new smoker build
Well I didn't get alot of visual progress done but I did get the frame for the smoke box build and atached the smoke box to it. And I got the gaps in the charcoal chute welded in. Hopefully moving forward i can get more visual progress done.

Re: new smoker build
Some decent visual progress got some of the frame work done and the fire box/charcoal chute mounted to the smoke chamber. Got the ash box framed up and I'll be starting to skin this thing tomorrow maybe.

Re: new smoker build
Bunch of progress today. Disapointed I didntnget finished its taking a lot longer than I thought. But I got the ash box plated in ash box door and main front door built. I got wheels out on it and stated some of the plateing. Everything that's 1in will be covered up. 2 weeks is up hopefully I'll be done next week and burning it in.
