Old Trailer, New Build

I just picked up this trailer, obviously started but never finished. The big pit on the back is 30"x55"x3/8". I'm thinking about going with a square firebox, 28"x22"x24" (14784 cu. in.). The stacks will be 5", I.D., and I'm thinking about a reverse/standard flow option, see picture #3 . There are steel plates under the grates. This pit cooks and heats very evenly.

The smaller pit will be used as a charcoal/wood grill only and will be moved. I plan on framing it up and adding a roof eventually. What do y'all think? Any and all input will be appreciated.

I love the picture of the offset. I can't wait to have one of my own.

I'd say the first thing you've got to address is all the weight being on the back end of the trailer... there may be enough weight in the trailer itself to counteract it, but it really looks like a repurposed car hauler, and I have my doubts..

dwilliams35, I might have to relocate both pits over the axles. By the time I add a firebox and stacks it will defintely be heavy on the end. Appparently it used to be a car hauler, is that a bad thing? Looking for input since this will be my first trailer build. Thanks!

No, not a bad thing, just referencing the probability that it's likely not just nutty heavy on that front end in relation to total weight. If you're moving the pits, problem solved..

I had a chance to talk with pit builder extraordinare (K.A.M.) and he gave me some great information. Here's the direction we're going to start in:

1. Take the pits off the trailer, remove the grates in the middle, and finish the deck with the diamond plate.

2. Service the axles and electric brakes.

3. Build the frame for the roof.

4. Finish the big pit, hybrid design, and reposition on the trailer.

5. Finish the small pit and reposition on the trailer.

That should keep us busy for awhile...time, imagination, and money is all I need now. Thanks K.A.M. for your time and expertise, I'm sure we'll be talking soon.

Here's a picture with dimensions if anyone has any ideas.

It was my pleasure Crew I enjoyed the visit. Your trailer is close to Bahama Mama in square dimensions. The front Vee screams dry storage for me. If you build your canopy square to the 13' then put a front wing like Bahama Mama you could use the top area as prep or even sinks.

Sounds like a great idea, thanks K.A.M.
