what is the purpose of a plenum on the stack

In my opinion it creates a much nicer transition for the heat/smoke to exit the chamber if a 90° has to be used. I slightly oversize mine.

building one now and overthinking the stack I have a piece of 4 inch pipe that's long enough

didn't know if it was needed since I'm broke don't want to waste rods or gas if I can keep from it.

The cooker will work without it no doubt about it. I have built plenty of cookers without plenums that perform flawlessly. If you have enough intake, exhaust and cooking chamber to firebox opening the cooker will work.
