So I bought some Rutland sealant in hopes of it sealing my lid better so I bought some and called them to ask specifically how to do it correctly. Did I need to do something special to the opening for it to work or just place it on the painted surface only. He said just add it to the surface and that it would work on any surface. Well, it did not so I an asking anyone here that has done this to comment so I can get it done correctly. I added wax paper on top of the silicone before it skinned over then placed the lid on top to get the correct seal. This morning I just took off the entire silicone with the wax paper on it.

Any help with this issue?

Is it a silicone sealant. Silicone needs a really clean surface to adhere to.
Id wire brush the surface really good then take some acetone or lacquer thinner to it after brushing clean. Acetone or thinner evaporates extremely fast after applying.

Once cured.....say at least 24 hours, stoke up the pit without food in it to burn off any impurities.

Clean your door seals with MEK to remove any grease. Once clean use Permatex black high temp RTV sealant. Place plastic wrap flat with no folds over the door opening and apply the sealant to the door flange. Ease the door down and let set over night. The nexta day open the door and peal off the plastic wrap.
