Thanks for the link and the info k.a.m. kinda just the type of Calculator I've been looking for. I'm starting to get some things nailed down as far as size and volume go so things are getting a little easier to process. Also, those backer rings I found behind the end cap welds, have you or anyone else ever run across them in any of your builds? Should I remove them or not worry about them? I posted a picture of them a few posts back. I'm sure I'll be back with more questions but thanks again for now! :texas:

Leave the rings they will not effect anything.

Well, it's been a while since I've been able to post progress, but I was able to get some work done today. Hinges are on and doors cut out minus the corners. Still need to flange the doors and put handles on. Goi.g to start on my firebox soon but think I will tackle the plenum first. I'm going with a 10" stack. Are there any calculations to base the design and size on? Thanks guys for all the help! :texas:

So I've seen people talk about using a chain and bottle jack to fix a spring door once that have been cut out. Could anyone give me a better idea of how this works? I can't get my kinds eye to see it. Thanks! :texas: :salut:

So I've had quite a set back in the building of my 500 gallon smoker. I had a heart attack last January 12 and since have had to have an ICD(defibrillator) implanted. I can no longer weld, but......I have found someone who is a FANTASTIC person willing to help me out. K.A.M. was a huge resource for me in the beginning and now I am looking for a lot of info quickly to let my friend know what to do.....I.E., stack length, half moon size from fire box to cook chamber. Can I "tag" so.eone in this post? Should I send a private message? I've really enjoyed being a part of this forum, though I haven't been able to be really active the last year. I would appreciate any and all help I can get! Thanks guys! :texas:

You can send a PM to K.A.M, he is a wealth of knowledge on pit builds. Or he may just see this in the next day or so and reply.

Thanks for the well wishes bsooner75! It's been almost a year and things are going well! My cardiologist wanted to implant the defibrillator as a safety measure but it been a big blow to me not being able to weld. But, I survived something 90% of people dont, so welding is the least of my concerns I guess. Thanks again! :texas:

So things are coming along nicely! Counterweights are on, food racks are almost finished, and work on the plenum and stack are just around the corner. So I have a question. Has anyone ever played around with putting some sort of "wind deflector" on the top of their stack? I live in the northeast and it can get pretty breezy and snowy in the winter time, which seems like a large part of the year! Anyways, I'm thinking it might be a good idea but thought I would put it out here to see if there was any experience on the subject. Think weather vane that spins with the wind but has a protective "shroud" over the the top of the stack to prevent snow or rain from falling in and wind from back drafting down the stack. Any help is much appreciated! :texas:
