Back yard smoker
Been searching and had it in my head i wanted a roughly 30" x4ft offset smoker. Well i found the first portion of the equasion. My idea as of now is to build a offset smoker. Round pipe square firebox. Id like to make a box above the fire box as well to use as a warmer and potentially as a vertical smoker (maybe later)

Lots of great Pit building info and links to be found in this thread so browse some of the posts when you get a chance. I think you'll be glad you did.

I'm no Pit Builder but I see a vertical there. Looks like there's some sort of knockout on one end for the smokestack. That sucker could have a Sausage rod at the top and 3 or 4 grates. You could use a little smaller pipe for the horizontal and firebox. I"ve got an old LYFeTYME set up like that; i'll post a picture.
However you decide to do there's a lot of info here and you can send Private Messages to members if you have questions. Good Luck!!

Re: Back yard smoker
Was looking at the pit calculator referenced in another thread. This tank will have a round end and a flat end since its a portion of a tank. Overall legenth is 51.5". Diameter is 31.25". I want to do a square/rectangle fire box. I plugged in numbers of 24x24x24 for the firebox. It is showing 105% differential. I guess im not totally understanding if that means it 5% over sized or does that mean it is drastically over sized? I was honestly just tossing numbers to get a idea of size. Ive read that over sizing the box is better and some references of 150% over sized. Ive also read that it would be better to have a taller fire box as well. I would like to build the box so i have ample room under the fire and probably a expanded metal or some sort of slide out fire tray for ease of cleaning. Something like the chicken scratch ive drawn. In thinking the throat? (Opening to the firebox?) Needs to have a bit of a lip to prevent grease travel into the fire box. I also while building want to add a some flat stock to be able to drop tuning plates down the road if needed vs making the mod later when i might be a tad bit more difficult.

Well i haven't made what id call exactly progress but it stands and rolls on it own wheels. The wheels will change but they will makenit much easier to move around in the shop. I will still build a wood rack but for now its off a shop table and upright

New steel, now that is something I never had, the only new steel I ever bought was the stretch metal for the grates...
in my fabrication days I always went to the scrap yard due to the price difference, and learned to work with what ever I could find

The 200 buck plasma worked like a champ on the 1/4. My redneck cnc worked pretty well. Bending the plate proved to be alot harder than i was anticipating. Only got that first bend completed completed last night. Needed some more clamps. Hf had them dirt cheap like 5.99 and this weekend they have a 30% off of 5 items under 10 bucks

Working with steel is hard work, and hard on the body, but a most rewarding lasting return for the investment.
