Got my propane tank for my smoker build!

Postby sklater » Sun Apr 28, 2019 8:57 am

I had looked into getting a propane tank from a guy’s backyard but had no way of loading it as I had zero vehicle access. But I found another guy a little further away but who could load it for me. Super excited to start this.

250 gallon
$150
Hauled behind my wife’s MiniVan.

Yeah, I should have taken pictures of me unloading. My driveway is on a slope up. So I backed into the garage. Couldn't get my jack to fit under it. Didn't know how to remove it then. Was going to get furniture dolly rollers but couldn't lift it as I didn't have an engine hoist. So, I used one of my tie-down straps, and hooked to the end of tank, then under the trailer back to the hitch. I then ratcheted it back until it moved. I got it about 50% off but couldn't move it anymore. So I just took the van, drove forward, then back hard and slammed on the brakes. Did that a few times and it came right off.

IT'S HUGE!!

Was talking to the guy I bought it from (He has a ton of these super cheap, if you want his contact, let me know, he's up in Denison, TX north of Dallas). He said most guys would turn it upside down, chop off the feet so you have a smooth surface to work with, and then would use the existing holes as the drain holes.

Next step is to find a trailer. Then set it up to the height I want it and start cutting/welding/fabricating etc.

So, wish me luck.

I found this one for sale, and like the utility and look of it. Though I prefer a wood storage box in the back, and also a sink.

Mine was in the back of my truck. I was able to roll it on to a wheeled work table. Then i put temp legs and casters so i could both have my table back amd move it. It was entertaining to get it rolled off the table amd on those feet. The feet will likely be changed or modified before im done. Its ridiculously heavy. The casters are 250lb rated from harbor freight and were like 20 bucks for all 4. All 4 swivelImage

What size is yours? I was thinking of putting mine up on some cinder blocks to work on it until i get the trailer ready to go.

Cinder block definitely work. I was mostly worried about moving it as i often have trucks amd other stuff in amd out.. actually put up some industrial pallet racks to help organize. I have a maintenance role at my work and tend to fabricate alot of junk amd bring things back to my shop to work on. Ive got a clamshell grill out of a mcdonalds that will be out at the shop soon as well i need to strip of all the electronics and pnumatics for a future flat grill project. Thinking about making a trailer out of both of them and sourcing a slightly smaller pipe for a backyard smoker as well if and when i get the other ones finished.

What type of welder would you recommend for this? I was told a mig welder and was wondering if that would be sufficient.

Wire feeds will work just fine. I would recommend at least a 180 Amp minimum to allow for maximum penetration on your welds. I prefer stick welding and do all my work with a Miller 225 AC/DC machine.

Id bet you could find a heck of a deal on a stick welder on letgo, craigslist and/or facebook marketplace. Stick takes a bit of patience but once you get the hang is a versatile type of welding
