Questions for my first build

Postby bass-n-fire » Thu Oct 03, 2019 9:56 pm

I finally started working on my first build after looking at a lot of the custom builds here. I’m building my smoker from a 250 gallon propane tank. So, far I’ve got the doors done and all the holes, except the drain hole, plugged. I’m at the point now where I need to start working on the firebox. I’m planning on 30x30x30. My biggest question so far is, is it acceptable to use 3/8 on everything except the bottom? The bottom would be 1/2”. Or is 1/4” good for for the sides and top?

Thanks for any advise and guidance.

I have built a many out of 1/4" that are still going strong. If you have access to 3/8" that would be my preference. Build the entire box from 3/8".

1/2" for the bottom is a bit overkill. 1/4" for the walls will work but 3/8" or even 5/16" would be better. The issue you may face is warping when it gets too hot. A way to prevent that is to add some bracing to the panels. Also have a fire grate that sits off the bottom an inch or so to keep the coals off of the bottom of the fire box. This will allow the tail to sift through and keep the heat off the bottom of the fire box.

Thanks for the suggestions. I believe I’m gonna go 3/8. Now just have to gather the plate. Luckily my brother says he may be able to get drops for no charge.
