1/4" plate will work fine for your end caps.
In my opinion the 8" is too large.
You could go with a 6" 24" tall and she will suck like a hoover vacuum.
A 4" is actually 25" tall but for a 60" long chamber I think the 6" would be a better balance.

I’m in Baton Rouge.

With the price of steel and it being diamond plate I would say it is a pretty good price.
I live in Vidor about 22 miles from the line. My relatives are scattered all through Louisiana I am the only Texan lol. I moved here back in the 70's.
