Opinions on vertical smokers

Postby Speed » Thu Jul 22, 2010 11:20 am

I'm looking at buying a new smoker once I return to the states and I'm considering buying a vertical smoker. What are yalls opinions on the different brands out there? I know a couple of people with backwoods and they have said they are cheaply made. I'm really liking the vault from pitmaker in Houston. Anyone ever use one of these? I think I could build a stumps clone for way cheaper than they are selling them but I'm trying to avoid bulding something so I can just jusmp right back in to competing when I get back. Any advise, guidance, or opinions are good ones!!!! Lets hear them......

It depends on 2 things. 1) How much money you want to spend. 2) Amount of people you want to cook for.

I started with the Weber Smokey Mountain cooker aka WSM. It is a great little smoker.

I haven't used a Stumps smoker but I have looked into them. The ones that I saw appeared to be well built.

I would have said the FEC but the man is in the military. Trying to save him a few bucks. Heck, I use an FEC in contests. I used 3 WSMs for 3 years in contests. My wife and I got tired of moving them in and out of the trailer. The FEC stays in the trailer.

I own two Vaults from Pitmaker; one at my CO home and one at my TX home. I really like the Vault. It holds heat at a constant temp and requires almost no baby sitting. I use mine with a BBQ Guru and the temp stays at 225 degrees with no effort for 4-6 hours. This past Sunday, I smoked two chuck roasts, six racks of beef ribs, 15 chicken leg quarters and 12 trout filets. Everything turned out great and there was still room for more food.

I voted for the Stumps a it would be my choice If I was looking for a pit but honestly my UDS is hard to beat, it dose everything a high dollar pit will. And I get to spend all that cash I saved on meat , Beer,12 old single malt and stogies.
On a Serious note:Thank you for putting it on the line for us all every day! Watch your six over there & get home safe!

I love my Backwoods Fatboy. Once I have the time and trailer complete, I will have two side by side with doors opening opposite each other.

Ritch at Gator Pits makes a really nice upright, "Rebel". EVERYTHING Ritch makes is top notch.

I have two homes; one in Broomfield, CO and one in Austin, TX. I have a Pitmaker BBQ Vault at each of these homes. I also gave one to my son for a birthday gift. I guess you can say that I really like the Vault. This past Sunday, I smoked two chuck roasts, six racks of beef back ribs, 15 chicken leg quarters and 12 trout fillets. Everything turned out great. The Vault is very well insulated and holds its temperature even when it is cold outside. It gets about six hours worth of heat from one load of charcoal. I think it's the best vertical smoker on the market.
