Interesting find

Postby TXCajun » Mon May 16, 2011 4:33 pm

Dropped by my local Academy yesterday and saw a smoker that they are carrying in the store but which is not listed on their web site. It retails for $1,500 and features a 20"x20" fire box with opening grill lid and stainless steel wood tray, a 36" wide 20" diameter horizontal smoking chamber and a square vertical chamber with slide out grill shelves. Construction is 3/16th inch thick welded steel. Looks like it is well made. Fit is actually very nice. Granted, it's not 1/4" thick steel but a nice pit nonetheless. Anyone else seen this one?

I haven't seen it, but if you are willing to spend $1500, why not get a custom 1/4" pit that you know will last a lifetime?

I'm actually looking at getting a Klose pit. This one just caught my eye. The wife and I were shopping for a replacement for our gas grill and this smoker was on display.

Having said that, keep in mind that "last a lifetime" is subjective. In reality, the warranties that Gator and Klose have on their pits are warranties against burnout (i.e. "limited" lifetime warranties). Given that I hope to live for at least another 20 years or so, if either of those pits last for that long, I would be one happy camper.

With proper care and maintenance, I bet my Gator lasts 50.

Mine was 20yrs old when it was passed down to me. The firebox might need a new bottom one day, but the cooking chamber itself will probably last forever.

I just dumped a can of spray paint on the outside this year to "touch it up".

I have a Lyfe Tyme pit… I'm the third generation to cook on it, and just replace the fire box last year…

I agree, 1500 is reasonable, but you can get a custom from one of the companies mentioned for around that. I'm surprised they have a pit like that. They seem to try and hit the 500 and under price point.

I was surprised, too. It doesn't show up on their web site and there was only one of them in the store.
